This set contains 5 mini faience-style tiles, each depicting a different Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph. The tiles are accompanied by a useful reference postcard showing a range of hieroglyphs alongside their associated letters of the English alphabet, supporting both decoding activities and classroom discussion.
Faience was widely used by the Ancient Egyptians from the Predynastic period through to the Islamic period. This distinctive material is made from a mixture of ground quartz or sand crystals, combined with small amounts of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and copper oxide, which gives faience its characteristic glazed blue-green appearance.
The tiles are ideal for handling sessions, artefact tables, and literacy-linked history activities, allowing pupils to explore Ancient Egyptian writing, symbolism, and materials.
